The Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles begin their 2024 NFL campaigns in a rather unconventional location: a Friday Night Football showdown at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil.

This Week 1 encounter marks the inaugural NFL game in Brazil, one of five contests scheduled outside the U.S. as part of the league’s International Series. Three additional matchups will be hosted in London throughout October, followed by one in Munich, Germany, in November.

This game is also a critical faceoff in the NFC, with both squads having secured wild card positions last season. The Eagles finished with a record of 11-6 but concluded the year in frustrating fashion, dropping their final two regular-season contests before suffering a devastating playoff defeat at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Green Bay, on the other hand, barely made it to the postseason through a series of tiebreakers but went on to stun the Dallas Cowboys before pushing the heavily-favored San Francisco 49ers to their limits in the divisional round.

A Historic Setting
The Brazilian soccer club Corinthians, which is lending its stadium for the first-ever NFL game on South American soil, has such a disdain for anything green that its management once considered painting the field black roughly a decade ago.
Players can even face fines if caught wearing clothing or footwear of that color, and sponsors must adjust to the rules if they hope to collaborate with a team boasting over 35 million supporters.
This is all in an effort to keep Corinthians fans distanced from their historic rivals Palmeiras, with whom they’ve clashed for more than a hundred years.
Eagles’ Strategy
However, on Friday, Neo Química Arena will be bathed in green as the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles meet in São Paulo for the second NFL game of the season.
The Eagles are officially designated as the home team. To appeal to Brazilian fans, they’ll don black helmets, white uniforms, and black pants—mirroring Corinthians’ traditional colors.
A Corinthians spokesperson revealed to The Associated Press on Sunday that the decision came at the request of the club’s president, who insisted green would only be tolerated for visiting teams. The source spoke under anonymity, as they were not permitted to publicly comment on the matter.
