The Detroit Lions started their season with a bang, defeating the Los Angeles Rams 26-20 in tonight’s match.
Detroit received the ball first in the extra period and prevented Los Angeles from executing an offensive play. Two rushing attempts set the stage for the drive. Khalif Raymond secured a first down on the initial jet sweep run. Following that, David Montgomery advanced the ball 21 yards into Rams’ territory.
Jared Goff then delivered a pass to Jahmyr Gibbs for a 10-yard gain. At this juncture, the Lions could sense the end zone approaching.
Montgomery took a few more carries and ultimately reached the end zone for the touchdown. He concluded with 91 rushing yards. Gibbs contributed 40 yards on the ground and scored a touchdown.
Goff completed 18 of 28 passes for 217 yards, including a touchdown pass and an interception.
The Lions held a significant advantage early in the third quarter. Goff connected on a 52-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Williams with 10:29 remaining in the quarter, extending Detroit’s lead to 17-3.
At that point, the Rams had to dig deep and claw their way back into the contest.
Stafford orchestrated an 11-play, 70-yard drive, culminating in a Kyren Williams touchdown that trimmed the deficit to seven points. Rams kicker Joshua Karty then nailed a 26-yard field goal, and Stafford connected with Cooper Kupp for a 9-yard touchdown.
During the Lions’ final possession, Goff maneuvered Detroit back into field-goal range, where Jake Bates nailed a 32-yard kick to level the score. The game was tied at 20-20 as it headed into overtime.
Williams ended the game with five receptions for 121 yards.
Stafford delivered an impressive performance for the Rams. He was more effective for Los Angeles in the second half than in the first. He concluded with 317 passing yards, a touchdown pass, and an interception.
The Rams’ offense faced a setback early when Puka Nacua exited with a knee injury and did not return.
